Labor Rights & Civil Rights is One Movement, says Oscar Owens – ATU Sec/Treas


Oscar Owens, was introduced by Jean Hervey, to the seated audience as International secretary treasurer for Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), who has maintained that position for 12 years. He was also introduced with a certain historic importance due to his distinguished accomplishment in the union of moving up to high level office in an International union. Hervey pointed out that it takes quite some time to move up to high level position in an International union, and the odds of black man attaining the position that Owens has attained and in the amount of time it took him to attain it, were unlikely. Therefore this accomplishment for Owens was remarkable and is to be remembered by all Union laborer in attendance. Oscar is the International secretary treasurer for Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) for 12 years. ATU which is located in Washington, DC has 189580 members across the United States. Oscar Owens told the audience that he got involved in the labor movement as a personal commitment to Civil Rights and Labor Rights. He asked the rhetorical question of what has changed in Tulsa and the entire nation since being inflamed in the 1921 Tulsa race riot? Owens response was that it would be through efforts of reflection and reconciliation from the site of that riot where we were all seated at on that day, that our nation would be a better or perfect place; and that perhaps the pain and suffering inflicted on some, 90 years ago, will serve as a constant reminder and a source <b>…</b>
